While the quote is oft attributed to George Orwell, the earliest matching quote was published in 1918 in a New York periodical called “The Fourth Estate: A Newspaper for the Makers of Newspapersaccording to Quote Investigator.

“Whatever a patron desires to get published is advertising; whatever he wants to keep out of the paper is news.”

It seems likely that media magnate William Randolph Hearst is the origin of the quote found on the editor’s desk.
