“Blogging” since 1996, www.spunkygidget.com since 2000.
- spirited; plucky, having or showing courage or spirit in trying circumstances, senses & feels far more than can understand or put into words…
Known as Spunky Gidget since I was a teenager, I am a goofball who descends from generations of clowns on the noble side of the family, while my grandma and grandpa on the other side are the country-western swing Three Rivers Band… When you look up “hyperthymia” on the internet you’ll find me. I am a clown and a designer. I love Jim Henson’s Muppets, and I think different.
- Franklin, North Carolina
- Charlotte, North Carolina
Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana
I was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where my family lived until my daddy died. We moved soon after leaving behind aunts and uncles who reminded me vaguely of Muppets, mainly namely Janice and Dr. Teeth of Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem.
Moved to Franklin, North Carolina
After my daddy died, we moved to Franklin in the highlands of North Carolina, which was something like living in a scene out of Lord of the Rings with Gandalf in the shire. I attended Cartoogechaye Elementary School.
While we lived in the mountains my mother attended an antiques auction where I came across a locked violin case. She won the bid for my violin, and after the auction closed they were finally able to open the case to reveal a beautiful violin in need of restoration…
Grew up in Charlotte, NC
When my mother met Melvin Baxley, he brought us a round tin of his mother’s pinwheel cookies and taught us how to make snow angels… and fourteen weeks later we moved to Charlotte, my mother his bride. My mother sent our auction prize to violin maker John Sipe for complete restoration, and I began lessons with Cynthia Osbourne.
At Thomasboro Elementary I tested into the “academically gifted” program immediately, but had to convince my parents to actually let me do it. I loved it. A few grades later the school held a contest for creating a Thomasboro mascot. Mine was chosen and we became the Thomasboro Tigers. Later my “Bee Cool Stay in School” poster wins so that I got to meet the Charlotte Hornet’s beloved Muggsy Bogues, and take friends to the show.
The bad hair continues.
Northwest School of the Arts
For middle school when Charlotte introduced the magnet school programs intended to reintegrate our racially segregated schools, I got into the performing arts school at the Northwest School of the Arts where I was a student in the Year Round “Open” program. I was first chair first violin in our performing quintet.
Harding University High
I enjoyed orchestra at Harding University High (International Baccalaureate School of Math & Sciences), and was first chair first violin, or at times first chair second violin, but I wasn’t interested in long hours of practice and pursuing music as my passion.
My father an artist and painter, at Harding I became interested in the formal training for media arts. I took all the classes offered, and was disappointed when I learned that was all the curriculum we had. I wanted to learn more.
So I dropped out of Harding to the dismay of our principal Dr. Venton Bell in ninth grade at 15 years old.
Unfortunately, when I went to sign up for design courses at CPCC, I found out that North Carolina state schools wouldn’t let me in until I was sixteen… I spent the days between then and my birthday catching the bus from our home on the West Side—Forsythia Circle off Freedom Drive—to downtown just hanging out reading at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library…

Studied Art, Advertising & Design at CPCC
Thus it was that at sixteen years old under a concurrent enrollment program for high school students I finally I began my study of Art and Advertising & Graphic Design at Central Piedmont. I had my first gallery showing as part of my art classes, and I also enjoyed taking more technical classes like the 4-color process hand “stripping” class from the graphics technology department.
Bank of America, Charlotte
I landed a dream job on the brand transition team handling the acquisition and transition of the Bank of America brand.
After the brand transition was complete I moved into a permanent role on the Bank of America Creative Services team.
I asked where can I get the absolute best training? The answer was Lynda.com. So I went to meet Lynda.
The Bank of America Creative Services East Meets West Trip in Chicago.
I left Bank of America Creative Services to pursue web design with another team. I attend my first conference, the NNGroup World Usability Tour in Seattle with my Bank of America colleague Curtis Sund.
